Family Law is not as simple as one may think. Unlike many other areas of law, it is a very complex field of law. It covers divorce, child custody, child support, spousal support, division of property, (both real and personal), wills and trusts, domestic violence, criminal law, fiduciary duties, pre-marital agreements and post marital agreements, (contracts), living together but not married, (contracts-what is known as Marvin situation: Marvin v. Marvin (1976) 18 Cal.3d 660 [1334 Cal.Rptr. 815, 557 p.2d 106]), and taxes.
Although many people think the following is included in Family Law, they are not and are handled under different aspects of law:
Adoptions are handled under Juvenile Law
Emancipation of a Minor is handled under Juvenile Law
Juvenile Dependency (children at risk of abuse, neglect, or being abandoned) is handled under Juvenile Law
Juvenile Delinquency (children may have committed a delinquent act) is handled under Juvenile Law
Guardianship is handled under Probate Law
Our offices will refer you to the proper attorneys in those areas.
